Member Story: Jonnie
Climb 2 Recovery supports a forgotten community of veterans, those who have completed conventional treatment but remain severely and chronically debilitated. They are at greater risk, yet are so often overlooked. What we offer goes far beyond clinical care; we provide purpose, belonging, and a path to rediscovering identity and confidence through adventure and community.
Jonnies’ story is a powerful example of why our work is so vital. His journey from struggling with PTSD to becoming a highly qualified professional and successful leader in the outdoors, guiding others through their own challenges, is exactly what Climb 2 Recovery is about. We don’t just offer support; we create meaningful, genuine and lasting change.
His words capture the essence of what we do, why it matters, and the transformative power of our approach. The impact of Climb 2 Recovery doesn’t just stay with the individual - it ripples out to their families, friends, colleagues, and futures. Jonnie is living proof of this. His story is one of resilience, growth, and the unwavering support of a community that refuses to let veterans be left behind.
“When I was first diagnosed with PTSD, I knew that improving my mindset would require effort, especially in doing the things that continue to drive and fulfil me-things that were once second nature to me. Whilst developing PTSD, I found myself losing touch with the very elements that make me feel like myself. This left me struggling with a negative outlook on life and a desperate desire to regain control of my future."
At the time, I couldn’t see a clear path forward, and the solution felt elusive. The emotions and disturbing thoughts clouded my judgment, making it difficult to think clearly. But the answer, though simple, became apparent as I began to find support outside of a clinical setting-specifically through Climb2Recovery.
This charity has been a pillar of support, providing me with stability and structure. In a short time, C2R has grown rapidly, and I feel fortunate to have been part of that positive transformation. Since getting involved, they have helped me achieve success in my professional studies outside of military service. I earned my International Mountain Leader certificate, along with other qualifications and experience that enable me to continue working in my chosen career as an Outdoor Education professional.
With the support of C2R, I’ve been able to build on my ambitions and deliver two successful overseas trekking trips. The backing of the C2R team gave me the confidence to take on these challenges. These experiences have allowed me to grow, learn, and aspire to new heights, both personally and professionally. I’ve also forged meaningful friendships and partnerships within C2R and the wider outdoor community.
For me, C2R has been-and continues to be-a vital source of support for both my needs and ambitions. This support extends to my family, whom I also strive to help and uplift. Life has thrown its share of unexpected challenges, but in the time I’ve been with C2R, they have remained a constant source of stability. For these reasons, I am committed to continuing to support C2R, mentoring beneficiaries when possible, and showcasing the invaluable work they do.”
