Member Story: Chris

Chris has worked at the highest levels in the outdoors for many years, he holds some of the UK’s highest mountaineering qualifications, he has been involved with Climb to Recovery for some years now, and is our Senior Instructor and Technical Advisor. He shared his C2R journey with us:

“Climbing has been a constant, positive thread throughout my life, and working with Climb 2 Recovery has been one of the most fulfilling chapters of my career. As a senior instructor and technical advisor for the charity, I’ve had the privilege of training most of our members and witnessing firsthand how they’ve embraced climbing and made it their own.

I’ve seen members progress in incredible ways -some have gained climbing or outdoor instructor qualifications, while others have used the experience to build personal confidence and resilience. These small but profoundly important successes have helped many of our members get their lives back on track. What’s even more special is how they’ve shared their love for the mountains with new members, fostering an environment of growth and mutual support.

My own journey began with the Royal Marines Commandos in the 1970s and 80s, where I served during the Falklands campaign. After leaving the service, I became an outdoor instructor, working in the field since 1984. Climbing has always been my passion, and I’ve been fortunate to channel that passion into coaching and mentoring others, both in my career and through C2R.”

Chris went on to train lots of members of Climb to Recovery and has witnessed how many of them have taken to the sport and made it their own. He enjoys telling us:

“Members have moved forward with their qualifications, some have become Climbing/Outdoor Instructors, and some have used the pathway to gain personal confidence in life. What makes Climb 2 Recovery so unique is its ability to provide a supportive, familiar environment for veterans and serving personnel as they transition to life outside the military. There’s a gentle echo of military camaraderie in our courses, but the focus is always on empowering members to explore themselves and adapt to their new worlds. Watching that transformation is a pure joy - it’s clear that the program bridges the gap, offering members the opportunity to dip in and out of support as they need it.

I’ve loved every second of my time in the outdoors, but what stands out most is seeing how climbing can help others. Climb 2 Recovery is more than just a climbing programme; it’s a lifeline, a community, and a path forward. I’m proud to be part of something so impactful.”
